This often happens in the late afternoon, so the sun is to the west and the rainbow viewed t the east. But I don't know why late afternoon vs early morning--could be that afternoon temps make formation of just the right water vapor happen more often. Don't know.

More rainbows late afternoon vs. early morning is a function of the increased frequency of storms (rain and virga) in the late p.m. More p.m. than a.m. storms are due to the day's solar radiation (insolation) heating up the surface and sending parcels of air up (convection). The convective cells really get their act together by late p.m.!
